We always used to say n feel proud that India is top in IT market, s/w engineers are pillars of world computer industries......
But......
Have u ever think that how many s/w products that India produces to the world. Don’t say tally, finacle these known to India only. I’m saying about Branded product like photoshop,windows,oracle,linux,unix,winamp,anti virus s/ws......u will finds immense s/w product that other countries has been produced n these products represent those countries.
Let’s talk about LINUX (Linus Trovold) which represent FINLAND a very small country and some of u even can't tell in which continent it exists. SAP it is a business package that almost every IT companies are using it and it represent Germany. Another example from Programming Languages like C ,C++,JAVA,PYTHON,LISP and many more... but here also i don't find a single one which is Indian.
Most people have confusion regarding MAYA (just by name taken from Sanskrit word "MAYA") that is an Indian product. Certainly not...
MAYA is originally developed by Alias System Corporation and now it’s owned by Autodesk Company (producer of 3D max studio).
We have Infosys, TCS (no.1 exporter from India), wipro, HCL... But do u recognize any one of their products. They are basically a Service provider not exactly a software company. These companies are busy in making financial software only but none of them recognizes as Branded product.
I appreciate some of companies like Polaris, 3i Infotech, Nucleus Software and Ramco which is making business softwares.But this is not the only area in which we always get involve.We can be a leader in Game industries. We can develop s/ws which is based on AI.We can develop an Operating System that fully based on AI.That OS could play a major part in security system. Generally s/w can be breach because it is based on programming language that any body could learn and become expert n even can use it for destructive purposes. I believe AI based system will be very difficult to breach. Right now i can not prove it but later i will let u know.
Yes Open Source can play an important role in making India a developer of branded products. Because Economy is also another obstacle for small IT companies of India. Products require longer to build and need deeper pockets. For a nascent industry in a developing economy, that has historically spelt higher risks for entrepreneurs.
So people(IT maniac)I'm requesting u to think about it......
Think like bill gates, think like Steve Jobs (Apple Macintosh), think like Ellison (ORACLE),

Manish there are a lot of people working on various open source softwares. Several people have started building indian language support into linux etc.
But still we haven't acheived much on the lines of product. Even today the core programming happens outside of india and we only do maintenance most of the time.
Also, are we taught to think on our own? The education too matters right?

I believe there was never shortage of talent. There was not enough infrastructure in India which is changing rapidly. How do you expect a person to contribute to open source with a the data BW in the order of bps !!!
